2 Carroll seniors sign sports scholarships

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. -- Two talented seniors at two Carroll County high schools have signed scholarships to play college basketball.

Whitney McClure, who attends Bowdon High School, will play for West Georgia Technical College.

"Whitney is a dynamic player. She was able to be very successful in her career here at Bowdon in a position that requires toughness but, more than anything, unselfishness," Bowdon High assistant basketball coach Marci Brown said in a statement. "She was able to earn the players' and coaches' trust. Without that, your team is left vulnerable. She accepted that role and thus we had a Sweet Sixteen appearance this year. She is much grounded, and her ability to keep the game in perspective will be an asset at the next level."

Villa Rica High School student Rhianna Warren will play for Savannah State University in the fall.

All Georgia patrols to crack down on drunk driving, speeding

All Georgia patrols to crack down on drunk driving, speeding

(WXIA) -- Summer 2013, as reported by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, makes ten years in a row that police are bumping up the number of patrols throughout Georgia - to crack down on dangerous driving.

Katie Fallon, spokeswoman for the GOHS said the boost in patrol is part of the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic) campaign. It is a strategy in which all jurisdictions of highway safety enforcement work to reduce aggressive, high-speed travel and driving under the influence. During the summer months, accidents happen from these two bad driving habits.

"Temperatures won't be the only thing making the heat rise this summer," Director Harris Blackwood said. "From drunk drivers to aggressive speeders, all unsafe motorists will be feeling the H.E.A.T."

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Driver Services issued a reminder on Friday for all students wishing to take the test for their dirver's permit or license over the summer.

Those students must obtain a "DDS Certificate of Attendance Form" from their school before the end of the school year before taking any driver's test during the long summer break from classes. A spokesman from DDS said the forms must be signed and notarized from each school, and brought when each student applies for a permit or license.

Because of summer break, the Certificate of Attendance Forms issued in May will be good until September 30.
