Local banks, children collect 4 tons of PB&J

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Metro Atlanta students have come through for their fellow children in a big way, "spreading the love" through peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta recently hosted their fourth annual food drive to benefit 30 local food pantries.

MARIETTA, Ga.  – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Come out to the Marietta Greek Festival for authentic homemade Greek food and pastries, live Greek music and Greek goods for sale. The festival will be held at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, which is considered “the South’s only Greek Amphitheater”. The church will provide free parking and a free shuttle. The church is located at 3431 Trickum Road in Marietta.

Come out to the Pioneer Days Festival at Tanglewood Farm. Watch live sheep-shearing during our month-long festival celebrating the spirit of the pioneers. Watch wool make the transition from sheep and alpacas to the spinning wheel. Check out the final products like sweaters and socks.

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- For this week’s installment of Best Spots, we've compiled a list of public pools in the area for you, your family and friends to take a dip and cool off in the heat of the summer sun (or in an aquatic center).

With an economy like ours, it’s imperative that people look for a bargain wherever they can and public pools offer fun that’s easy on the pockets. Check out these local pools and enjoy a classic, cost-effective, exciting summertime experience.

Douglas County

Boundary Waters Aquatic Park is located in Douglas County and it offers year-round swimming in an “8-lane, 25-yard heated competition pool, and a 4-lane, heated therapeutic/teaching pool”. The park offers $3.00 daily passes and $4.00 passes for non-residents. It’s is located at 5000 Georgia Highway 92 in Douglasville.

Cobb County

Cobb County is home to four indoor aquatic centers and two outdoor seasonal pools.

UWG poster sale to aid Japan

UWG poster sale to aid Japan

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- A graphic design assignment at the University of West Georgia will also aid victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The final assignment in Graphic Design 2, taught by professor David Short, was to develop a social or political poster.

"With the timing of the disaster and it having such a profound effect on so many people, I thought, why not merge the two," Short said.

Kevin Shunn, chairman of the art department, gave the go-ahead for the fundraising effort. The seven students in Short's class developed and refined their designs; art professors then chose the top three pictures.

Those three will be reproduced and offered for sale starting Thursday, May 12 at the art department's offices in UWG's Humanities building. Only 25 prints of each design will be made.

Each of the limited, autographed editions will be $20.

MABLETON, Ga. – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Visit O’neal Plaza On May 7 for “Spring Concerts on the Plaza” which is being presented by the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville and Douglas County. The concert will be held between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. O’Neal Plaza is located at O’Neal Plaza and Church Street.

Neighbors can buy plants grown by master gardeners and receive growing advice at the Master Gardner Plant Sale in Carrollton. This event is one of the biggest events for the CCMGA and proceeds fund all of the diverse programs run by the association throughout the year. The sale will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

LOCAL PROFILE: John Tanner State Park

CARROLLTON, Ga. – If you enjoy the water and the sun, come out and swim in the “largest sand swimming beach of any Georgia state park”. The park offers swimming, boating, hiking and miniature golf for under $6. The park is named for local businessman John Tanner, who previously owned the park.

The park features fun for the entire family and visitors can swim and boat in the expansive Tanners Lake from sunrise until sunset. For those visiting the park on a fishing trip, the lake allows private boats and those with electric motors, only.

The campground has 31 campsites, six motel units, and a pioneer camp. Most camp goers take advantage of the camping, miniature golf, volleyball and horseshoes. The park opens at 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The park is located at 354 Tanners Beach Road in Carrollton.

In today’s economy, it’s important for shoppers to get the most bang for their buck and the thrift store is where you can do that. Open your mind fashionistas and fashionmistas, the thrift store isn’t only for those in need.

According to some thrifters, this store is good for vintage home goods. The Smyrna Thrift Store is a good place to find affordable clothes, if you can get past the new furniture in the front of the store. The store is across the street from a Goodwill store but shoppers say Smyrna Thrift has the better deals. The store is located at 3150 South Cobb Drive in Atlanta.

Home of the “finest selection of used clothing in Atlanta” Last Chance Thrift Store is one of the largest thrift stores in the area.
