Man sentenced in plot to ship deer to Ga. | Crime
VILLA RICA, Ga. -- A west Georgia man has been sentenced to six months probation for trying to illegally ship deer from Pennsylvania to his Georgia ranch.
According to information presented in court, 48-year-old Donald Lee Vaughn tried to transport 11 white-tailed deer to his property in Villa Rica in 2009. He admitted that he did not have the deer tested for diseases.
"Shipping wildlife across state lines without testing for illness and disease potentially threatens the health of our wild deer population," said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. "Experts tell us that once diseases are spread, they are almost impossible to eradicate."
In addition to serving time on probation, Vaughn must also pay a $20,000 fine.
