UWG gala to honor notable alumni

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The University of West Georgia will hold its 2013 Alumni Association Awards Gala on Saturday, Apr. 20.

The gala, "An Evening with the Stars," will be at the school's Townsend Center for Performing Arts. The evening begins with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by a 7 p.m. ceremony.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at westga.edu.

This year's honorees include Dr. Laurie N. Barron ('99), principal of Smokey Road Middle School in Newnan; UWG Director of the Center for Public History Dr. Keith Hébert ('98); GlendonTodd Capital investor and operating partner John Harris ('71, '73); and former NASA mathematician Jimmy Akin ('64).

Neon Trees, Phillip Phillips to perform at UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The University of West Georgia has announced the lineup for its 2013 Spring Concert.

Alt-rock band Neon Trees is this year's headliner. Georgia native Phillip Phillips, who won Season 11 of "American Idol," is also scheduled to perform.

The concert will be held Friday, Apr. 19 at 8 p.m. in the UWG Coliseum. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Mill Town Music Hall to host Newsong

BREMEN, Ga. – Mill Town Music Hall welcomes Newsong on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. Newsong will sing hits from their 30 years together. Located in Bremen (1031 Alabama Avenue), the venue focuses on wholesome family music and events.

Newsong is one of the leading Contemporary Christian groups in the country. The group has received eight GMA Dove Award nominations and one Grammy nomination.  Some of their more recognized hits include The Christmas Shoes, When God Made You and The Same God. With more than 18 albums including their recently released Swallow the Ocean, they are among the most prolific and successful acts in the genre.

Bremen BRIDGE Festival to benefit Health of West Ga.

BREMEN, Ga. – West Georgians are encouraged to make a difference in their community through their voices and feet on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. The BRIDGE Fest is celebrating its sixth anniversary with “The Sing-off” competition and a 5K Race. Hosted for the second year at Mill Town Music Hall (1031 Alabama Ave.), the series of events will benefit BRIDGE, a local campaign designed to fight drugs in West Georgia.  BRIDGE (Build Recovery in Drug Gripped Environments) provides assistance and education to pre-teens and teens in finding the right path to a drug-free life. In addition, the campaign exposes adults to treatment options and support available to families affected by this epidemic in West Georgia.

This annual family celebration will hold activities throughout the weekend that the whole family can enjoy:

Mill Town Music Hall to host Jeff & Sheri Easter on March 29

Mill Town Music Hall welcomes back Southern Gospel royalty – Jeff & Sheri Easter – on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. The Easters will sing hits from their 25 years together. Located in Bremen (1031 Alabama Avenue), the venue focuses on wholesome family music and events.

The Easters have been regulars on the Gaither Homecoming Video Series for 20 years and have won numerous awards, including six Dove Awards. They have also received two career Grammy nominations and Sheri has been named The Singing News Favorite Alto 11 times and Female Vocalist four times. With nearly 30 albums together, they are among the most prolific and successful acts in Southern Gospel.

Coke partners with Firehouse Subs for national contest

ATLANTA -- Coca-Cola and Firehouse Subs are partnering for a national sweepstakes centered on stock car racing.

Coca-Cola is sponsoring the Coca-Cola Photo Finish sweepstakes at Firehouse Subs locations through Apr. 21.

During the contest, life-size cutouts of participating Coca-Cola Racing Family members will be placed in FIrehouse Subs locations. Firehouse Subs guests can snap a photo with the cutout and submit it to win. Guests can submit photos via text to cocacolaphotofinish.com, or entries can be mailed.

Participating drivers include Joey Logano, representing the Georgia and Gulf region; Greg Biffle, representing the West and Central region; Danica Patrick, representing the Florida region; Denny Hamlin, representing the South region; and Tony Stewart, representing the Mid-Atlantic region.

UWG holding preview event for transfer students

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The University of West Georgia will host a preview event for prospective transfer students this week.

The Transfer Preview Day will be held Friday, Mar. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

UWG spokeswoman Elizabeth Stone said the event will allow potential students to tour the campus, walk through residence halls, meet professors and learn all about the areas of study they can pursue.
