UWG holding resource fair for high school students

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The University of West Georgia will host a college resource fair for gifted high school students next month.

The fair will be Thursday, Sept. 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school's Z6 Dining Commons. It is sponsored by UWG's Advanced Academy, which provides dual enrollment opportunities for high school students.

High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to attend the fair and learn all about some of the country's top colleges and universities.

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The University of West Georgia will hold a big celebration this week for all incoming freshmen from Coweta County.

President Dr. Kyle Marrero and mascot Wolfie, as well as numerous alumni, will represent the school during the send-off. It will be held Thursday, Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Newnan Centre, and is free to attend.

The event "is a great way for new students to be celebrated and recognized for their decision to 'Go West' and for our wonderful alumni to play an important role in welcoming these students to the pack," according to UWG director of alumni relations Frank Pritchett.

Attendees will be treated to refreshments and live music from Musicology Newnan.

Florida Georgia Line concert sells out in record time

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- It took less than 20 minutes for rabid Florida Georgia Line fans to snatch up all the tickets to the band's upcoming concert at the University of West Georgia.

UWG spokeswoman Elizabeth Stone confirmed that the Oct. 23 concert sold out in 17 minutes.

A limited number of VIP packages are still available. The package includes reserved floor seating, a pre-show acoustic performance and party, and a photo opportunity with the country duo.

VIP packages are $199 each and can be purchased at townsendcenter.com.

The concert will be held at UWG's Coliseum. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the fun scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Florida Georgia Line to perform at UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- One of the hottest duos on the airwaves will hold a concert in Carrollton this fall.

Florida Georgia Line will stop by the University of West Georgia on its Here's to the Good Times tour. The country group is best known for its quadruple platinum single "Cruise."

"We can't wait to give our fans what they have been asking for all year -- our own headline tour," Florida Georgia Line member Tyler Hubbard said in a statement. "It is unreal, and the first night of the tour can't get here fast enough!"

The Here's to the Good Times tour begins Oct. 3 in Brookings, S.D. It will be at UWG's Coliseum on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Parade, concert, fireworks rescheduled for Saturday

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The city of Carrollton's Fourth of July celebration has been rescheduled for this weekend.

The annual People's Parade will kick off the fun on Saturday, July 13 at 9:30 a.m. A patriotic show featuring the Carroll Symphony Orchestra's Sounds of Liberty Concert and ending with fireworks will begin at 8 p.m.

The parade route starts at the Dairy Queen on Highway 27 South and ends at the Kmart on Bankhead Highway, while the concert and fireworks display will be held on Carrollton Elementary School's front lawn.
