One Tank Trips: Historic Banning Mills

WHITESBURG, Ga. -- Chances are, you've never heard of Southern Living's Best Weekend Getaway in Atlanta.

Historic Banning Mills is located 52 miles southwest of Atlanta in Carroll County. It's definitely a "who knew that was here?" spot -- a hidden gem in the little town of Whitesburg.

Every year, 30,000 visitors come to Banning Mills' main lodge -- school groups, families on vacation and corporations on retreats. Couples visit for romantic weekends in the hot tub suites; Banning Mills can handle 100 guests a night in its cabins.

But the main draw zips overhead. Tucked away in the west Georgia hillside is an adventure fantasy land -- the tallest freestanding climbing wall in the world and the longest zip line in the continental U.S.

The zip line canopy trail is nine miles long. To ride the entire thing would take two days.

State labor officials said Thursday the rate declined because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs.

The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 10.4 percent.
