Carrollton mother wins $377K Mother’s Day surprise

ATLANTA – A Carrollton mother of three celebrated Mother’s Day with a win from the Georgia Lottery. Melissa Wynn, 53, played the new instant game Silver 7’s and won a $377,777 top prize.

While dining with her three adult children on Mother’s Day, Wynn scratched her lucky ticket.

“I almost did a backflip,” she said. “This is unbelievable!”

Wynn claimed her prize Tuesday at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

“This is the best Mother’s Day I’ve ever had,” she exclaimed.

The lucky winner intends to purchase a home for her daughter and purchase a Harley-Davidson for herself.

Joe’s Bottle Shop, 3034 Bankhead Highway in Austell, sold the winning ticket.

Big Blue Friday caters to UWG fans

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The first Big Blue Friday of the University of West Georgia's athletic year will be held Jan. 11.

Big Blue Friday is a tradition that gives Carrollton businesses the opportunity to show their UWG spirit.

"We are excited about the enthusiasm our fan base has and look forward to another successful Big Blue Friday," UWG senior associate athletic director Eddie Duffey said in a statement.

Certain shops and services will offer discounts to anyone who wears UWG Wolves gear on Big Blue Friday. Participating locations include Advantage Office Solutions, American Pie Pizzeria, The Border Mexican Restaurant, Carroll County Animal Hospital, Chick-fil-A, Harry T's Car Wash, Next Level Sports Center, Ozier Apparel, Papa John's, Shane's Rib Shack and the UWG Bookstore.

Big Blue Friday will follow Thursday's 7:30 basketball game against Valdosta State, and will precede Saturday's tangle with West Florida.

RaceTrac hiring for Free Coffee Week

ATLANTA -- RaceTrac is hiring more than 100 temporary employees for the holidays.

The Cobb County-based chain of gas stations will hire two extra people at 66 Georgia locations to help promote Free Coffee Week.

Employees will hold signs from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Dec. 17-21. Sign holders must be at least 18 years old and clean cut.

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

ATLANTA -- Belk Inc., operator of Belk department stores, has committed $100,000 to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

ATLANTA -- Kangaroo Express is celebrating National Coffee Day on Saturday, Sept. 29 by offering one-cent cups of coffee to customers.

Guests can put their spare pennies to use by cashing them in for a 12 oz. Bean Street Coffee from 8 a.m. to noon.

"We love our guests and our guests love coffee. That's why National Coffee Day is the perfect time to show our appreciation with a cup of coffee that can be paid for with the least appreciated coin of them all -- the penny," Kangaroo Express senior VP of marketing John Fisher said in a statement.

Walmart layaway is back, better this year

ATLANTA -- The Walmart layaway program will return just in time for Christmas, the company announced Monday.

This year's layaway will have plenty of new features, including more eligible items and a $15 Walmart gift card for those who pay for their entire layaway purchase.

Layaway begins on Sept. 16. Customers who like their local Walmart stores on Facebook beginning Aug. 28 will be able to start their layaway early, on Sept. 14.
