Grandmother of 16 wins $411K in lottery

Grandmother of 16 wins $411K in lottery

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- A Carrollton grandmother thought she was dreaming when her husband told her she'd won a Fantasy 5 jackpot prize.

"Somebody pinch me," said Charlotte Rivas, grandmother of 16.

Rivas matched all five winning numbers in the May 19 Georgia Lottery Fantasy 5 drawing, winning a whopping $411,711 prize.

Winning numbers from the drawing were 14-18-28-31-39. Coleman's Grocery on Highway 92 in Fayetteville sold the lucky ticket.

Rivas, 61, said the win came at a wonderful time. She and husband Vince celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary May 2, and the mother of seven's birthday was May 29.

"This was to my surprise," Rivas said.

The couple recently began building their dream house and will use their winnings to complete it.

Carroll County: $170k extra for high school athletics, $8m less for rest of school system

Carroll County: $170k extra for high school athletics, $8m less for rest of school system

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Carroll County's School Board is giving away a total of $170,000 to the booster clubs and athletic programs of all five high schools, over the objections of two board members who are saying the money should go toward bridging the school system's projected budget shortfall of $8 million. That shortfall could result in nine teacher furlough days and a pay cut of one percent during the 2011-2012 school year.

"I don't really have a problem with any athletic programs," said one of the dissenters on the School Board, Sandra Morris, on Wednesday. "But I do have a problem with giving money to booster clubs when we're gong to be telling teachers that we've got to cut their pay."

Morris and Board Member Bart Cater were the two members who voted -- in the minority -- against giving the $170,000 to the county's five high school booster clubs and athletic programs.
