BEST SPOTS: Dog Parks

BEST SPOTS: Dog Parks

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- For this week's edition of Best Spots, we have compiled a list of dog parks for you to take you furry friend for some fun.

Recently, dog parks have been sprouting up in the Atlanta area. With newly modified leash law restrictions, owners who may or may not have yards need a place for their dogs to run free and get adequate daily exercise.

Some say, these parks are becoming more popular as the country begins placing more of an emphasis on health following the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative.

Dog owners in the Douglasville can take their furry children to the Deer Lick Park for some off-leash exercise. The park is fenced and smaller dogs and larger dogs have separate play areas. The park is located at 2105 Mack Road in Douglasville.

Burger Park in Smyrna is, also, an off-leash park and is moderately sized, for its type.

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have launched a new program that invites all local soccer coaches and referees to enjoy free tickets to Silverbacks home games this season.

"The Silverbacks are committed to supporting the sport of soccer at all levels," said Michael Oki, president of the Silverbacks. "This new program is our way of thanking Georgia's thousands of coaches and officials who are making a positive impact on the local soccer community on a daily basis."

To participate, local soccer associations must provide the Silverbacks with the names of their coaches and referees, who may then call three days before any game to reserve a free ticket. The ticket must be claimed by 5 p.m. on the business day before the game.

Villa Rica High names new football coach

VILLA RICA, Ga. -- Mike Falleur has been named the new head football coach at Villa Rica High School.

"I am very excited to be a part of the Villa Rica High School community and family," he said. "I look forward to working with the students, athletes, parents, faculty and staff to build relationships with a thriving community."

Falleur has been a head coach since 1992, working in such schools as Tucker High, Burke County High, Elbert County High and, most recently, Northwest Whitfield High in Tunnel Hill.

A combined record of 142 wins and 70 losses, 12 teams making the state playoffs, and coaching the playoff runners-up in 1997 prove Falleur's dedication and leadership toward the young lives he serves every day.

"I am delighted to welcome Coach Falleur to the faculty of Villa Rica High School," said principal Adam Herring.

Whitesburg Elementary Students 'Get Active, Get Fit'

WHITESBURG, GA -- The Whitesburg Elementary community has spent the past two months working hard in the Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge.

Almost 100% of the school's students set aside 30 minutes a day for fun activity, exercise and dancing.

Their commitment was rewarded on Friday, Feb. 4, when representatives from Radio Disney visited the school and congratulated the students for completing the challenge.

Whitesburg Elementary is one of 40 elementary schools in Georgia to be recognized for its Get Active, Get Fit program.

School districts interested in participating must register online and commit to staying active for 15 minutes a day for at least 40 out of 55 days.
